Two Railways employees were arrested for allegedly cheating more than 100 people after promising them jobs in the Railways.
“The arrested have been identified as Om Pal Singh (38) and Sandeep Kumar (37),” said Ashok Chand, DCP (Crime and Railways).
Singh is a helper in the office of the Division Mechanical Engineer, Northern Railway, while Kumar works as a Staff Welfare Inspector at the Indian Railway Conference Association in Connaught Place. “The accused charged anywhere between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 4.5 lakh for arranging jobs,” DCP Chand said.
The arrests followed a complaint filed by one of the victims that a Railways employee had cheated him of money after promising to get jobs for his daughter and a relative. “The complainant had been promised jobs of booking reservation clerk or ticket checker in the Railways. He paid Rs 2.5 lakh and was to pay another Rs 2.5. lakh after getting the job,” DCP Chand said.
Singh and Kumar, who had allegedly been cheating people since 2008, were arrested following investigations.
Police said the accused identified job aspirants through local contacts. To win their trust, the two showed the aspirants a recruitment form bearing the stamps of the Railway Recruitment Board and of a senior officer, both of which had been were fake. The duo would collect photos and educational documents from the candidates. “When the call letters for the examination (for the posts) were received by the candidate, they were told to appear for it as a mere formality. The candidates at times cleared the examination on the basis of merit,” DCP Chand said.
