69.5 percent of Facebook users in the US say they are comfortable with the personal information they give out on the social network. Out of the remaining respondents, 23.2 percent said they are not, and 7.3 percent have no opinion, according to a Poll Position national telephone survey.
On December 1, 2011, the social media company surveyed 1,174 registered voters in their recent poll, and 496 were willing to talk about their Facebook account. They were asked the following question: “Are you comfortable with the personal information you provide on Facebook?” The poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults, and this particular question should be taken with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
As you can see in the table above, when narrowing down the results for gender, women felt more comfortable than men. 74 percent of women said they were fine with the personal info they provide on Facebook, versus 63 percent of men.
Young people are unsurprisingly far more comfortable than older people in sharing content on the site. In the 18 to 29 age group, 81.0 percent of Facebook users said they are okay with the personal information they provide on Facebook, while 19.0 percent said they are not. On the other side of the spectrum, in the 65 and older category, just 49.7 percent are comfortable with the personal information they provide, 27.0 percent are not, and 23.3 percent had no opinion.
Facebook’s privacy problems are long and numerous, but these results show that after the dust settles, the majority of its users are still comfortable with the service. Indeed, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg did once say that users eventually get over their privacy anxiety.
